Synopsis of Heart Land: A H-Indie Film

“Heart Land: A H-Indie Film,” is a comedy of dil (heart) and miti (soil). An Indian-American consultant, Karan, is sent to Texas to save the finances of a Texan farm. Karan is the product of the most prestigious schools and consulting firms. He is all cosmopolitan, all Manhattan and all New York…all the time. In rural Texas, he happens to stick out…quite a bit. Hank, a rugged, man-of-the-earth, conservative Texan farmer hates city folk but must work with Karan to save the farm. Hank can't seem to comprehend how Karan uses spreadsheets, rather than his hands, to make the farm profitable. While working on the project, Karan falls in love with an all-American, sweet, beautiful and tough Texan farm girl: Heather. Heather just happens to be Hank's daughter. And she's fallen in love with Karan as well.

After saving the farm, Karan returns to New York City to tell his parents he wants to marry Heather. Karan's father, Ravi, is a cardio-surgeon and Karan's mother, Baby (who insists on being called Bay-Bay), is an Indian socialite for whom everything has to be perfect. Ravi and Baby make a deal with Karan: he must take Heather to Punjab to get the approval of Karan's grandfather, Ranbir Singh. If Ranbir Singh approves, the wedding will move forward.

Ranbir Singh is a tall, strong, intimidating, conservative, strong-willed farmer who is the godfather of his village (pindh). His conservatism is so rigid that he believes his own son, Ravi, is a fool for having left the farm to become a cardio-surgeon. The villagers both revere and fear Ranbir Singh. Karan has never met Ranbir Singh, never been to India, doesn't speak a word of Hindi or Punjabi and knows nothing about Indian culture. And Heather? Well, she has never even left the farm.

“Heart Land…” follows Karan and Heather (and Heather's father, Hank, who tags along) through a series of comedic situations with Ranbir Singh and a colorful cast of characters in the pindh of Punjab that bring rural America and rural India together. And when rural India meets rural America, there's just no place for New York.
